“Topotypes” : Ground as
Design Material marks the birth of Taktyk. It demonstrates our approach to site-making, which privileges the
importance of ground-conditions and the raw experience of landscape.
“Topotypes” can be
understood as a contraction of the terms “topos” and “prototypes”.
In our view, Topotype means work ON and production OF transformation process supports. It combines the notion of ground, place (topos) with that of figure and imprint (typo). This hybrid term also refers to the production and representation of prototypes, to the notion of series and to pedology. The ground is a support for projects and experiments. In the cases of studies which follow, a tactile approach is produced by the exploration of the topology of the places, the expression of hydrological and ecological phenomena in the sub-strata of the ground (substrate), the exposure of the materials, the horizons of our cities.

Topotypes : a practice based research

“Topotypes” : Ground as

Three
competition entries enabled our office to explore Topotypes
:
- Shore (Rotterdam) propose
a prototype of a Superdune coping with sea/river level rise. Superdune is a
third landscape between the city and the harbour of Rotterdam enabled by the
presence of a major sandy bed under the Maas river.
- Meirama (Galicia) is a
critic of quick forestation strategies in Spain. From coal mine to carbon-forest, our entry uses large earthworks to create a resilient and culturally
meaningful Galician Forest.
- Helsinki 2050 looks at
the specific ground behavior of this region of the globe (isostasy) to sustain
an urban archipelago concept.

Topotypes
research is currently tackling two directions: water urbanism and climatic
adaptations
Taktyk is born out of a fascination for water territories. Through water urbanism, our practice engage with flooding and water stress regimes. Our research on Topotypes are informed by water cultures across the globe. Our projects tackle speed and excess/lack of water in Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Asia and Australia.
Water is in Venice (lagoon park), in south Belgium (vesdre valley), in Lebanon (Eden to Tripoli), addressed through designing flows.
In greater Paris we have designed a water matrix to transform Saclay campus (Saclay city campus) into a city. In Brussels our self initiated research entitled “a sponge on a table” (BULB) advocate for a renewed water culture through prospective study, built projects, exhibition and talks.
